1 DEFINITION
Tolu Balsam is a balsam obtained from Myroxylon balsamum (L.) Harms (Fam. Leguminosae).
2 SPECIFIC TESTS
ROSIN, ROSIN OIL, AND COPAIBA
Sample: 1 g, powdered or crushed, if necessary
Analysis: Place the Sample in a small mortar, and add 10 mL of petroleum benzin. Triturate well for 1-2 min, filter into a test tube, and to the filtrate so obtained, add 10 mL of freshly prepared cupric acetate solution (5 mg/mL). Shake, and allow the phases to separate.
Acceptance criteria: The petroleum benzin layer does not show a green color.
FATS AND FIXED OILS, Acid Value(401)
Sample solution: 1 g in 50 mL of neutralized alcohol
Analysis: Add phenolphthalein TS, and titrate with 0.5 N alcoholic potassium hydroxide VS.
Acceptance criteria: 112-168
FATS AND FIXED OILS, Saponification Value(401)
Sample solution: Add sufficient 0.5 N alcoholic potassium hydroxide VS to the neutralized liquid obtained in the test for Acid Value to make the total volume of the alkali solution added 20.0 mL, heat the liquid on a steam bath for 30 min under a reflux condenser, and cool. Add 200 mL of water, or more if necessary.
Titrimetric system
(See Titrimetry (541).)
Mode: Residual titration
Titrant: 0.5 N alcoholic potassium hydroxide VS
Back-titrant: 0.5 N hydrochloric acid VS
Endpoint detection: Visual
Analysis: Titrate the excess potassium hydroxide in the Sample solution with Back-titrant. Perform a blank determination.
Acceptance criteria: The total volume of Titrant consumed, including that required to neutralize the free acid in the determination of the Acid Value, is equivalent to a saponification value between 154 and 220.
3 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
PACKAGING AND STORAGE: Preserve in tight containers, and avoid exposure to excessive heat.
