-An amorphous, partly hydrated SiO2 occurring in glassy granules of varying size. When used as a desiccant, it frequently is coated with a substance that changes color when the capacity to absorb water is exhausted. Such colored products may be regenerated (i.e., may regain their capacity to absorb water) by being heated at 110° until the gel assumes the original color.
For use as a desiccant, use ACS Silica Gel Desiccant grade.
