(4-Methoxyaniline), (USP 1-Dec-2020) C H NO 123.06 CAS RN®: 104-94-9. (USP 1-Dec-2020) Use a suitable grade with a content of NLT 97.0%.
On storage, p-anisidine tends to darken as a result of oxidation. A discolored reagent can be reduced and decolorized in the following way. Dissolve 20 g of p-anisidine in 500 mL of water at 75°. Add 500 mg of sodium sulfite and 10 g of activated charcoal and stir for 5 min. Filter, cool the filtrate to about 0°, and allow to stand at this temperature for at least 4 h. Filter, wash the crystals with a small quantity of water at about 0°, and dry the crystals under vacuum over phosphorus pentoxide. (USP 1-Dec-2020)
